Gaza militants launch rocket attacks in effort to derail peace talks By Catrina Stewart in Jerusalem

Short-range rockets and mortars rained on southern Israel yesterday as militants sought to derail the revived peace process on the second day of talks between Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

Militants in Gaza, the coastal enclave controlled by Hamas, fired at least nine projectiles into Israel, causing no injuries. Israel responded with an air strike on Gaza, killing a 23-year-old Palestinian man.

The upsurge in attacks came during talks in Jerusalem, where Washington is pushing for a breakthrough in the peace process, launched a fortnight ago after nearly two years of stalled negotiations.

At the end of the second day, George Mitchell, the US envoy, sounded a cautious note of optimism, hinting that the two sides were making progress over the extension of a construction freeze in the Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank.

"We continue in our efforts to make progress in that regard and believe we are doing so," Mr Mitchell told reporters after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met in Jerusalem.

"The two leaders are not leaving the tough issues to the end of their discussions," he added. "We take this as a strong indicator of their belief that peace is possible."

Fatah leader says no progress in proximity talks

A senior Fatah leader said here on Thursday that the Israeli-Palestinians proximity talks did not yield any progress that meets previously set conditions.

The meeting between US President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington on Tuesday did not provide any good signs, Nabil Shaath, a Fatah Central Committee member, told reporters in Cairo after meeting with Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa.

Shaath and Moussa discussed the Middle East peace process and ways to achieve the Palestinian reconciliation and end the Israeli embargo imposed on the Gaza Strip since 2007.

"There has not been any progress through the indirect talks, and thus, a meeting (of the Arab Peace Initiative Follow-up Committee) requested by the Palestinian National Authority and was agreed to by Secretary-General of the Arab League, will take place soon," Shaath said, adding "that meeting will assess the whole situation and will make an Arab decision on the issue."

According to the Fatah leader, the Palestinian decision will be submitted to the Arab Peace Initiative Follow-up Committee's meeting scheduled for July 29, to coordinate a concerted Arab action.

Qassam hits building in southern community

A Qassam rocket landed near a building in one of the communities in the Sdot Negev Regional Council early Wednesday, causing damage to a packing-house. There were no reports of injuries.

Avi Aptelboim, head of the community's emergency squad, reported that "a Color Red siren was sounded at around 4 am, followed by a rocket which landed inside the community, near the packing-house. The packing-house sustained heavy damage and it won't be operated today. There were no injuries, thank God."

"The rocket landed right next to the packing-house.
The equipment near the packing-house was damaged, and the building itself sustained damage from shrapnel," said one of the residents.

A Good Excuse to End a Bad Relationship

Israel could see what was coming. Before the convoy set sail, Israeli leaders pleaded with Turkish officials to stop it; they offered to allow the supplies to be delivered through an Israeli checkpoint. But Erdoğan’s government let it go anyway. Thus, Israel had no choice but to intervene directly. And those on the boat made sure it turned violent.

Now, Turkey is milking the event for all it’s worth. It accused Israel of state-sponsored terrorism. It compared the psychological impact of the incident on Turks to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on Americans. Turkish President Abdullah Gül called the Israeli raid a crime against humanity and said Israeli-Turkish relations will never be the same. Erdoğan labeled it a massacre. Turkish armed forces announced several cutbacks in cooperation with Israeli forces. The government also offered to supply Turkish naval protection for the next “aid” convoy to Gaza; “This would be, in effect, an act of war,” wrote Mark Steyn, “—more to the point, an act of war by a nato member against the State of Israel.”

What do the Swedish Gaza activists hope to achieve?

.....Who actually profited from what happened? Well, most analysts agree that the biggest beneficiaries are the radical Islamists of the Middle East, notably Hamas, the terrorist organization which currently rules Gaza. Hamas won a major PR victory and gained valuable international legitimacy at the expense of moderate Palestinians and the Fatah leadership of the West Bank. Politically this is a boost for those Palestinians who object to peace negotiations with Israel, and prefer the more violent path of jihad, the so-called holy war against Israel and the non-Muslim world.

In Turkey, Islamist extremists are milking the incident to win easy points against secular and modernising forces. Iran is delighted that the world’s attention is being diverted away from its nuclear programme and arms deals with Hezbollah and Syria. As so often before in the Middle-East, the rhetoric of peace and freedom becomes a tool to strengthen despotic, terror-sponsoring regimes which scoff at both. This happened largely because, as Israeli author David Grossman put it, Israel acted like a puppet on strings pulled by a small fanatical Turkish organization......

The chemtrail conspiracy theory holds that some contrails are actually chemicals or biological agents deliberately sprayed at high altitudes for a purpose undisclosed to the general public. Versions of the chemtrail conspiracy theory circulating on the internet and radio talk shows theorize that the activity is directed by government officials.^[2] As a result, federal agencies have received thousands of complaints from people who have demanded an explanation. The existence of chemtrails has been repeatedly denied by government agencies and scientists around the world.

The United States Air Force has stated that the theory is a hoax which "has been investigated and refuted by many established and accredited universities, scientific organizations, and major media publications". The British Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has stated that chemtrails "are not scientifically recognised phenomena". The Canadian Leader of the Government in the House of Commons has stated that "The term 'chemtrails' is a popularized expression, and there is no scientific evidence to support their existence."

4 Kassam rockets hit south

No injuries in latest Qassam attacks; local mayor: We hope not to see escalation soon

Four Qassam rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel Thursday, causing no injuries.

One rocket was fired at Sderot Thursday evening prompting the Color Red alert to go off. The Qassam apparently exploded in an open area near the town.

Israel likely to free 980 Palestinians for Shalit Israel is likely to free up to 980 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit, the State Prosecution announced on Sunday. The prosecution was responding to a petition submitted to the High Court of Justice by a group of bereaved parents, requesting that the names of all Palestinian prisoners included in the prisoner swap be disclosed to the public. According to the prosecution, Israel is likely to release the 450 prisoners requested by Hamas as part of the deal to see Shalit released after three years of captivity in the Gaza Strip. Following that, said the prosecution, Israel would free another 530 prisoners as a "gesture to the Palestinians." The list of those prisoners has still not been finalized, said the prosecution. None of the names of prisoners to be exchanged will be published until after a deal has been secured, according to the prosecution. In its statement, the prosecution also wrote that the military censor is authorized to forbid any particular piece of information from being published in the media if publication could seriously harm the chances of Shalit's quick return. The censor is also authorized to forbid any article that might increase the 'price' Israel would pay for Shalit and thus significantly harm the security of the state, said the prosecution. Nonetheless, there is no practical way to carry out public negotiations against a bitter enemy, wrote the prosecution, adding that Israel is facing a terror organization that is holding a kidnapped soldier and is requesting the highest price for his release. "Ambiguity on the part of Israel is absolutely necessary. Without ambiguity, it would not be possible to carry out effective negotiations and to realize the goal of bringing Gilad Shalit home," wrote the prosecution. Shalit faily neither 'encouraged nor ill at ease' The abducted soldier's parents met on Sunday with Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, as Israel and Hamas reportedly were preparing to seal the prisoner swap deal. "I am not feeling encouraged nor am I ill at ease," Noam Shalit told reporters on his way into the meeting. "We are still waiting." Media reports last week predicted that a prisoner exchange deal could be completed by Monday. Israel and Hamas came closer to the prisoner deal last week when officials said Israel had dropped objections to releasing 160 prisoners. According to Germany's Der Spiegel, the deal will secure the release of 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in total, 450 in the first phase and the remaining 550 later. The Voice of Palestine radio station said Saturday that Shalit would be transferred in coming days to Egypt, which has been mediating for his release. However, media sources have reported a snag in the talks over some 70 to 100 names of Palestinian prisoners which Israel is not willing to release - including Fatah's West Bank secretary general, Marwan Barghouti.
